Camp Lejeune Overview
Over four decades, contaminated drinking water in North Carolina’s U.S. Marine Core Base Camp Lejeune exposed hundreds of thousands of people to cancer and other serious illnesses. Between 1953 and 1987, two of the eight wells at Camp Lejeune were contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals. These wells affected children, military families, patients, and workers. Fifteen illnesses, including cancer, reproductive problems, birth defects, and Parkinson’s disease, have been linked to the water contamination.
Camp Lejeune’s water contamination caused suffering, illness, disability, and loss for dedicated families, but justice has been delayed. Victims were unaware of their exposure until 2012 as access to medical care was limited. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA) allows Veterans, their families and other individuals who were injured due to connections with the base to file claims for compensation.
